Is Nicaraguan pottery, pueblo pottery?

In the market place pueblo pottery is recognized as pottery made in the pueblos of the Southwest United States. Pueblo pottery is actually a result of artisans making pottery based on an old cultural tradition.

“Pueblo” is Spanish for “small town”. San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua is a small town with a 2000 year tradition of pottery making. So, the quick, easy answer is – YES – San Juan de Oriente, Nicaraguan pottery is pueblo pottery.

Let’s go further. Why is this distinction important?

One of the reasons the association of SJdeO pottery as pueblo pottery is important is because of the attention collectors place on the cultural integrity of traditional Southwest pottery. The market place for collectible pueblo pottery is motivated by the culture, craftsmanship and technique. Within the individual pueblos families are known for maintaining and advancing generations of pottery traditions.

While the pottery of Nicaragua is relatively unknown in the international market place the pottery tradition in that rejoin of Central America goes back as far and even more ancient than the Southwest rejoin of the US. In this case the lack of information and recognition of the ancient history in the area has an influence or the contemporary output of the artisans maintaining and advancing the pottery tradition.

The current artisans of San Juan de Nicaragua have revitalized the pottery output over the past 35 years. Before that time women maintained the connection to the pottery tradition by making ollas and utilitarian vessels in a fashion that dates make to well before Spanish arrival in 1524.

The collector of Nicaragua pottery today has an opportunity to view both traditional varieties of pottery that reflect the Nicoyan Indian tradition as well as the contemporary pottery motivated by a movement of third generation of influential potters.

At www.nicaceramicart.com the master artisans of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua are represented in a way that promotes the artists, the art work and the cultural heritage that make this group the rising stars of the pueblo pottery collecting world.

Miguel Maldonado ceramic sculptures will be featured at the NICA Ceramic Art booth at Grand Central Holiday Market opening November 14th. This will be the fifth year for NICA Ceramic Art at the Grand Central event.

Miguel’s portfoloio has also been updated at nicaceramicart.com

Known for the uniqueness and quality of work the NICA booth is a annual destination for collectors in the City, around the country as well as international visitors.

Although the space features artwork by all master artisans, contemporary artist Miguel Maldonado has been the star of the show. Miguel, who learned from master artisans at a young age, was able to innovate a bold, modern concept with roots in the pre-Columbian culture. The results of this work are spectacular. And this season we will be featuring some extremely large vessels along with smaller gew like examples.

Here is a preview of some of the Miguel Maldonado sculptures to be featured at Grand Central 2011……. these image are not the quality needed to truely represent the work, but hopefully you will get an idea.

As I get more involved with taking web videos I have gone back to my first effort which I filmed in various visits to San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua in 2001 and 2002. This was done or an old style mini dv camera and I had a editor work with me to put it together.

You can see this video, in three sections, on our website www.nicaceramicart.com at this location: Three Generations Video

I enjoy watching the older videos and although it didn’t become the marketing tool I hoped it would many customers, teachers and fans have enjoyed the information and explanation that the video offers.

I also get to see the many differences that the pueblo, the artisans and the art work have gone though over the past 10 or so years. Living conditions have improved considerablly and the quality of the artwork has gone through the roof.

I plan to develop and improve our video marketing using short, informative videos. These videos will be incorporated into our various websites and can be seen on our youtube video channel.

Enjoy!

Santiago Gutierrez returns to Nicaragua after his first trip to the United State tomorrow after selling major sculptures and winning three awards. His first exhibit at the St. Louis Art Fair was the most successful where he sold 34 sculptures.

Collectors were amazed by the detail and craftsmanship of Santiago’s work. Customers who have known us over the years were taken by the uniqueness of Santiago’s’ sculptures compared to other master artisans of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua.

Santiago will have a big presence at our event at the Holiday Market in Grand Central starting on November 14th in the heart of Manhattan. Here are a couple of images of the museum quality sculptures exhibited by Santiago. Some of these sculpture will be set up at www.nicaceramicart.com as we revamp the website to represent our inventory better.

Leave us any comments you may have.
